Penguin 2.0 Baby!

Looks like the dreaded penguin is back with a vengeance and it’s looking to attach those spammers out there with brute force once again! My guess is some of you reading this have felt a negative effect from the algorithm update that was announced last week on the 22nd by none other than Matt Cutts himself. Matt recently released a video that was meant to explain what we should be doing in the next few months in terms of SEO and he basically told us what we already know which is; provide a good user experience and you will be reward. He mentioned that penguin 2.0 will be coming out soon and how it will be targeting spammers and black hat SEO’s that are involved with link schemes and purchasing links. Matt mentioned that there were going to be putting more emphasis on link schemes with the spam team so as long as you are using white hat techniques like us they you are in the clear ;).

He also mentioned that they are working on more sophisticated link analysis program that will be able to detect links better and also try to communicate better with webmasters. Ideally he would like to see a one stop shop that webmaster can go to if they have been hacked so that should be interesting to see. Matt also mentioned that they are working on a way to help webmasters who are authority figures in certain industries, in my opinion he was indirectly trying to stress the importance of social signals like authorship.

One other thing that Matt mentioned that the new update with do is filter out the SERP’s so that multiple pages with the same domain won’t clutter the page. This could be very helpful for those that were trying to rank for queries that had many pages from one powerful directory which we have seen in many cases.

Just hours before announcing the algorithm update Matt Cutt’s was doing an online interview and explained that 2.3% of U.S search queries would be effected by the update. He mentioned that the update will be placing more emphasis on the entirety of the site rather than just the home page. He also mentioned that you should check out the Google Webmaster Tool’s Youtube Channel for interesting information on this and how Google Webmaster Tool’s will notify you of being manually penalized after the update.

The new Penguin 2.0 update seems to be exactly what we expecting, a update that will help clear the results of spam and present better quality sites that provide user experience. Our goal is not to build links, it is to make the most user friendly site possible that is rich with high quality content. If you are already thinking like a true SEO or working with a SEO firm like us, then you shouldn’t be surprised with the details of the update. Our concept is to think like a search engine, if your job is to provide searchers with high quality results then what would you look for in a site? Makes sense right?
